Star Reports promises to get your news out. Pap!

118885444_f560b07900_mBrilliant news from The Star this week. The newspaper has launched an application that allows Kenyan smartphone users to share their news in real time with the rest of their country.

The android-based app, named Star Reports, is similar to CNN’s iReport. It allows non-journalists to send in their pictures, videos, and audio-recordings for publication in the mainstream media.
The app would, in theory, enable voices we might not otherwise hear bring us stories we would never have known. It would allow you and the communities you work with to add your views and news to the national debate.

“The ‘reports’ will be anything that the user considers important – traffic, weddings, sports, graduation ceremonies, election related stories — the possibilities are endless,” says Dickens Olewe of The Star.

According to the newspaper, a website will be set up so readers can view the entire stream of content, or filter stories according to various categories and regions. Those stories will also feed into The Star‘s workflow, where the newspaper and affiliated radio and television stations can pick up submitted content for print or broadcast.

Star Reports can be downloaded from Google Play.
